Welcome to BigHorrorGuide
Here you can find reviews about movies, tv series, books, graphic novels within the horror genre, but science fiction and fantasy are represented as well. Aside from reviews about new and trending movies, series and books, there’s a lot of room for the classics too.
Horror is maybe the most diverse genre with many subgenres, ranging from ghost stories, weird fiction, dark fairytales, the supernatural, comedy, slashers, body horror, monsters, arthouse and many more. Horror is not always about chopped off limbs, blood splattering everywhere or gruesome violent killers and deaths. It can be a heartbreaking story, a coming of age or a symbolic story about social issues as well.
Horror is also very subjective, what scares you, might be lame or funny to others. But which subgenre you love in horror or what scares you, horror is about scary stories we like to tell each other to feel save in real life. It’s escapism at its best.
It feeds the imagination, about the grotesque, the weird, the bizarre and the horrible things we hide under our beds.
Personally I’m not a fan of some subgenres like home invasion, torture, rape-revenge, the real life horrors people actually die from. I don’t like mental illness being abused for the sake of amusement especially when it’s not accurate. And I don’t like animal cruelty, especially when a real animal is being used and maybe even hurt.
On BHG you will find reviews about movies, tv series and books. I try to be as objective as I can, for I have my own preferences. Therefore I have a rating system that specializes the general rating. Rating factors like entertainment factor, fun factor, scare factor, epic factor, originality factor, drama factor or popcorn factor, and more, should determine in a more precise way how the movie, series or book is rated.
I give stars ranging from 1 to 5:
- ★★★★★ = excellent, outstanding, a must, not to be missed
- ★★★★☆ = very good, highly recommended
- ★★★☆☆ = good to average, but still enjoyable
- ★★☆☆☆ = not so good, could’ve been better, but not a total turn-off
- ★☆☆☆☆ = bad, not good at all, not recommended
Explained, Whodunnit, Classics and Lists
Besides from reviews, some movies or series or books need some explanation and I will try to provide a clarifying article in the Explained category.
Also some movies or series or books have a masked or unknown killer and in the Whodunnit category articles you can read all about them.
The Classics category is reserved for movies, series and books made and written in the 20th century or even further back in time. Because it can be all about the Trending movies and series, that doesn’t mean older stories are less or forgotten.
In the category Lists you can find all sorts of lists, about a wide variety of topics.
