[TV Review] Scream Queens Season 2 (2016) ★★★★★

Chanel No3, Chanel and Chanel No5 screaming in scrubs in Scream Queens season 2

Scream Queens screams even louder with terror and hilarious campy fun.

Scream Queens has left the Wallace University and moved into a hospital and takes with it its amazing cast. With a whole new setting comes a new mystery and a new killer. This time Chanel and her Chanels, Zayday, Dean Munsch and Denise Hemphill have to take it up with the Green Meanie who kills all of their patients.

It’s going to be hilarious and over the top as ever. With the insensitive remarks and selfish behavior of Chanel, the gruesome over the top kills, new lovers and all kinds of strange diseases they have to cure while solving the mystery of the Green Meanie killer.

This second season consists of 10 episodes that reminds of a real hospital series but with a killer on the loose.

Dean Munsch has decided to buy a hospital to cure the incurable and she has her own reasons. She offers Zayday who’s a medical student now, an internship and she also takes Chanel, Chanel No.3 and Chanel No.5 on board. She hires two smart and incredibly handsome doctors, Dr Brock Holt and Dr Cassidy Cascade and in the basement Hester is locked away like a Hannibal Lector.

As a Green Meanie killer starts roaming the halls of the hospital killing all of the incurable patients who indeed did get cured by Brock and Cassidy, Zayday starts sleuthing again and finds out it all goes back to 1985.

Find out who the Green Meanie really is, here.

Why you should watch it

If you liked the first season then you will definitely like this one. It’s just as over the top hilarious, maybe even funnier and it takes the form of a hospital series. Every episode a new incurable patient has to be cured only to be killed shortly after. It has dark humor and Chanel steps up her game. She has to, because Chanel No.3 finally learns how to love and Chanel No.5 finds out she’s actually really smart although treated like a stupid burden.

The structure of the storyline works really well. Making room for character development and while they’re fun caricatures, they strangely also become more human. Except for Chanel, she’s wired that way and works as a symbol for the ignorance, the stupidity, the selfish behavior, narcissism and disinterest of society’s worst. Even Dean Munsch proves to be a real human, while Dr Cassidy thinks he’s a vampire and undead and Dr Brock has an evil hand. Zayday stays her own determined and resolute self and saves the day with a little help from the rest and a lot of heroism of Denise Hemphill.

Besides a serial killer, there’s a lot going on. Chad is back, but not for long. Denise Hemphill has got promoted to special agent and is fierce as ever. And of course what’s Scream Queens without Hester? There’s romance, a coming and going of patients, housing problems, medical degree problems, Dean Munsch has life or death problems of her own, there’s competition and there’s Nurse Hoffel who despises them all. And finally the big mystery underneath it all that has to be solved.

It’s again a great slasher that is unique, takes on an anthology structure, but isn’t. With daring dark humor and over the top campy fun. It’s chaotic, it’s fast paced, it has social commentary and it has a great super cheesy killer ending.

The series looks great, the set design, the outfits, the Green Meanie costume, the cinematography, it works to create an out-of-the-box slasher with a witty and yet campy style. With a macabre atmosphere due to the somewhat shady vibe of the hospital and the toxic swamp in the backyard, it’s a perfect follow up to the University and starts fresh, although, stinky.

My favorite part

Because it al began at a Halloween party, it has a great Halloween vibe, with a Halloween massacre and great over the top Halloween costumes. It’s a fun episode where Chanel turns blue and has to dress up like Smurfette. And Chanel outdoes herself this time by adding new recruits to be Chanels so they can act as human shields and can be killed off instead of herself. She’s really an awful person. It’s so over the top evil and selfish, but sadly funny too.

The kills are more awesome but so are all the characters. And there’s finally some justice for poor Chanel No.5 who proves to be a medal idiot savant. She was always the nicest one and now she can do finally some good, while doing something she’s good at to boot.

And there’s a little surprise for us, connecting the first season in a fun way with this one, which makes it more complete.

The new characters Brock, Cassidy and Hoffel are absolutely brilliantly chosen to spice things up. Especially Hoffel played by Kirstie Alley revels in her role. But so does Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts is great as ever. It’s a super cast that really lets the series shine while the fun splatters unto the screen just like the blood that is flowing generously.
